A Unique San Diego Experience
The original Coronado Ferry was designed to transport horses and buggies. This vital link to downtown San Diego ran from 1886 to 1969, the year the Coronado Bay Bridge finally opened.
The Ferry remained a vital link across San Diego Bay, moving passengers, cars, and bicycles between downtown and Coronado. The ferry ride was brief but scenic, offering clear views of the harbor and skyline before the bridge changed the commute forever. Locals used it daily, while tourists marveled at the novelty of crossing water to reach Coronado’s beaches and historic Hotel del Coronado. The gentle rocking of the vessel and the low hum of the engines created a relaxing passage. Onboard conversations and seagull calls filled the air. The ferry wasn’t just transportation, it was part of the San Diego experience. It still is actually, as any of our Coronado Bike Tour Riders take the ferry to begin our tour.
